The farm is first mentioned in a cover letter to the Elder Västgötalagen dated August 14th, 1225. It describes how the monks of Alvastra Monastery met with the liege lord and the lawmen in Västergötland to set out the boundaries for part of what later became Almnäs.

From the Middle Ages until 1527, Almnäs belonged to Alvastra Monastery. In 1527, Gustav Vasa implemented the Reformation and Almnäs came to belong to the Crown until 1587 when Margareta Axelsdotter Bielke, through an exchange with King Johan III, brought together 12 homesteads that are essentially Almnäs of today.

Over the centuries, a number of noble families have owned Almnäs, among which the most significant for the farm are Sparre, Posse, Stackelberg and Dickson.
